The Rhythm of Family is here (and a give away!)

the rhythm of family
Today is the official release date of Amanda Blake Soule's third book, The Rhythm of Family. It was lovingly created with her partner Steve and four children (now five!) chronicling their family's seasonal discoveries, whether it be in the kitchen or amidst the wide open spaces of their home in Maine. I know I'm not the only one in love with Amanda's gentle, thoughtful ways. She has inspired a new generation of families to open their eyes and heart to nature based learning and living... and pioneered an online community that spreads far and wide. Yes, Amanda is a very special woman, and I was honored (in the deepest sense of the word) when she invited me to contribute my Nature Stamps to this new book. I first experimented with pod printing exactly, I mean to the day, two years ago. I blogged about it here. And then experimented some more right here. By the time Amanda contacted me, I was deep in nature printing mode and she thought it would translate beautifully to the book she was working on. And here it is!
nature stamps
See those red hearts? They are the secret print of a walnut half. Living surrounded by black walnut trees, it was inevitable that we discover their magic centers. When I sent Amanda the printing samples for the book, I also gathered together a kit of pods and shells for the Soule children to explore some nature stamping on their own.
stamping
I was thinking more in terms of giving the kids an activity during Amanda's full day, then adding to the book... but I have been pleasantly surprised to see poppy prints peeking out from several other projects throughout the pages.
books
Amanda sent me an advanced copy, and I've read it from cover to cover. It is truly my favorite of all three of her wonderful books. The photography is stunning and some of her very best. The activities and recipes are ALL ones that my family will enjoy. The essays and thoughts shared by both Steve and Amanda are wise, thought provoking and beautiful. I know that living in a similar region to the Soule family makes this kind of seasonal living very accessible to us, but The Rhythm of Family will inspire you to live more connected to the earth and your family where ever you may call home. And of course, Amanda didn't send just one copy... she sent two. She knows just how much I love giving away books! Thank you Amanda, Steve and all of the sweet Soule clan! Please leave a comment in this post between now and Thursday 8pm EST. I'll select a random winner and announce it on Friday. Don't forget to leave a trail back to you (i.e. email address, blog link, etc.). Yesterday, I shared how much we love picking blueberries and peaches in early August, I'd love to hear how you celebrate this time of year in your part of the world.

Comments are now closed. Thanks so much for joining in!
And the winner is:

  1. The book looks super. We have lots of blackberries ripening on hedgerows and love to pick them and make jam/muffins/pies etc., very yummy and free!

  3. We're looking forward to the county fair, which is always in mid August. We'll continue to visit the beach--the water is at its warmest in August and September. But in the very early mornings, sometimes, you catch a whiff of fall, and as much as I love summer it won't be long before I'm thinking apple crisp & football. I, too, enjoy living somewhere with seasons, although...I could do without single-digit temps and an iced-in driveway when that rolls around!!

  4. What a lovely book! We don't have children yet, but being children at heart, my husband and I love to hike in the summer. We've also enjoyed geocaching in our area.

  5. What a nice give-away... I really like her books, and looking forward reading this book too... I would a blast winning the book over here!

  6. I'm right along with you with the Soule love. I don't even have a family and she inspires me (as do you). I'm also right along with you with the love of picking blue berries. I picked them as a child with my Papa, and I never did come to like the taste of them. I'm the perfect picker because I won't eat a single berry picked! I always give them away.

  7. I have been patiently waiting for this book. Right now it is extremely hot and humid where we live, so we are looking forward to fall so we can spend more time outdoors. It really is hard to enjoy it right now!

  8. Could there be anything more beautiful than a family seated together at a table full of pods, leaves, and seeds to stamp and two bowls of fresh, wild blueberries to savour? Like your blog, the book would be further inspiration for more days like this. Thanks!

  9. I've loved her first two books and can't wait to explore the third. What a fun giveaway!

You ask about what are we doing in this period of the year so...for me it's the second month of my first work of ever (exept for babysitting ^-^). But I also find time for some dyeing experiment with plants, for wolk in the wood looking for berries and interesting things to harvest and I also find some times for preparing the house for a incoming member of my family: an hedgehog, that will arrive in september.

Okay so the groundhogs love the pears, too...and a flock of geese pass through at least once a week. You'd never know we live in the city!

  124. Oh how I would love to win a copy of this lovely book!

We are in a different space this August than other years - new city, someone going into kindergarten - and so this early August is all about enjoying a time that we won't see again, and about exploring our new city.

  125. Thank you so much for this opportunity. We celebrate early August in NSW Australia sitting by our wood fire. I like to knit, read and bake especially at this time of the year. xxoo

  130. All of Amanda's books are wonderful, I'd love to add the third to my collection! It's no surprise at all that you are contributing, Maya.. you are kindred spirits. My boys are exploring more art forms now that they're a ripe 4 & 1/2 years old, this would be perfect.
We're enjoying our little harvests, our bicycles, the White Mts, the Cape sand... for as long as we can. Thanks so much for the chance.

  134. I've been eagerly awaiting this book. August is month of saying - what did I desperately want to do this summer that I haven't yet? Each year I seem to forget that Sept. 1 is not the end of spending time outside; it's actually the start of much more pleasant outside time.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I can't wait to get a hold of this book. We tend to spend lots time hiking, exploring and watching for the first signs of fall. Spending time at the pick it yourself farms, canning and freezing and putting away our faves to enjoy again in the winter.
    Thanks!
