vintage globe hack

My mom bought this vintage globe without a base for a quarter at a yard sale this summer. It rolled around for a couple of days... even bounced its way into several photo shoots before it began its search for an inspired resting spot. Here are several possibilities...

rusty cast iron umbrella stand:

pewter bowl:

Christmas tree stand from the 40's:

vintage caged trouble light:

vintage foundry mold:

doubled up foundry molds:

Which is your favorite? We'd love to hear!

  6. Very cool. I'm personally digging the pewter bowl as a stand.

  7. I like the umbrella stand - you could still put a shelf on the bottom rack to store atlases or travel books... and a cup of coffee (tea?) in the ring while your enjoy your own miniature travel library...

  8. I think it goes best on the pewter bowl. It feels the most like a real globe stand. The spherical shape makes it feel more balanced as well.

  9. Umbrella stand definitely (an old urn would look good too).

  14. Umbrella stand or the first foundry mold. I think the scale of the pewter bowl is off.

    Good find!

  15. Definitely the umbrella stand. Puts it at the right height for exploring.

  16. what an awesome find for only a quarter!

i would have to vote for the pewter bowl.

  17. I think the first one..the umbrella stand... I think it needs to go on the other side of
the zebra closet.. on the one side
you had a umbrella stand right...it would be fun to put this on the other side.
You know what would be fun too?
Do you know the glass balls that use to be on nets... they are usually green?Wouldnt it be fun to cover this globe with a fishing net and hand it from the ceiling? I think it would be fun!
What ever you choose it will be lovely I'm sure. I hope we see it in its new home!?!?! Hope you are feeling better too!
    Take care sweet friend!

  34. I'm casting my vote for the umbrella stand - the two balance each other well and the tall stand gives the globe a sense of importance. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. The first one! The umbrella stand has a place for the moon.

    ReplyDelete
  36. you're all amazing!

teaborg- you have taken my breath away with your simple and brilliant comment!

  37. I like the umbrella stand. It looks very Galileo.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the pewter bowl for a smaller space and the umbrella stand for a larger one. They're all very fun!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm partial to the umbrella stand ... I love the height of it!

    ReplyDelete
  40. You know my answer! ORANGE all the way.

    ReplyDelete
  41. How neat! I'd say either the umbrella stand or the single foundry mold.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ohhhh no.... I saw this post when my husband was beside me and being the avid cartographer he is, he got all excited and told me to 'BOOKMARK THIS SITE!!!!!!' when I said all it was is a globe you got at a yard sale...

Ok... bookmarking your site (even though you're already in my bookmarks) under 'Hobbies-GLOBE making'.

    :D

And we like the cast iron umbrella stand. :D

  43. The umbrella stand...you could even get a model of the moon and put it in the little holder halfway down!

    ReplyDelete
  44. All are great! My Favorite has to be the pewter bowl...Super Cute!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oooh, the rusty iron umbrella stand - a globe, especially one as beautiful as this should be placed at childs eye level!

    ReplyDelete
  46. What fun. The umbrella stand is great. But I was struck by the proportions of the Christmas tree stand... and I agree with those who said that the orange foundry mold really makes the colors pop. Yep...I may lean toward the foundry mold.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Umbrella stand for me...xmas tree stand would be second choice.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So inventive! The umbrella stand is my favourite. Second choice would be the foundry mold :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. They are all great-amazing how changing the base changes the whole look of it. But for me it's the rusty stand. They look as though they were meant to be together...

    ReplyDelete
  50. They are all great, but if you want it to most functional rather than decorative I would go with the umbrella stand.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I vote for doubled up foundry molds. The globe looks great on them.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I like the umbrella stand, cuz it wouldn't take up any room on a table or shelf. Although I do like the pewter bowl, too!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I quite like the Christmas Tree stand. It's so very substantial, and quite pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think it's the umbrella stand for me. I have a deck pretty similar to yours and it would just fill a corner beautifully! Glad I stumbled across your blog...it's beautiful and inspiring. Karen :-)

  55. I love vintage globes! I like the umbrella stand the most. I think it would look cool somehow afixed to the top of a bookcase :) Or it could be hung from a corner in a room as a paper lantern would be! My husband is a geographer and we have great hopes to have a huge wall in our next house (THE house we root in) that is a world map. Cool!

    ReplyDelete
  56. umbrella stand, could you wire it to be a lamp?
    that would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  57. The pewter bowl would be more like the size of the original stand probably, but I love the foundary mold or the doubled up foundary molds. The brick color highlights the colors of the continents and makes the globe look substantial and solid. The whole look is kind of modern, funky. I love the globe!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Umbrella stand all the way! They really all are cute, but that one just feels "right" to me. What a nicely faded globe too, we are looking for one similar. Just wish that we had better thrifting options in NYC!

  60. Hiya,
Thought I'd add my vote - for the first stand, the old umbrella stand. It's a piece on it's own but makes the globe stand out as the focal point a little more than the others.

  61. Definitely in love with the rusty umbrella stand with the pewter bowl coming in at a close second.
