girl power!

There is something quite phenomenal happening at stitch*camp this week. Everyone has crossed over to machine sewing, and with that has come such an amazing sense of confidence. As these girls realize the potential of combining their newly gained skills with all of the materials I'm keeping at the ready, their has been an explosion of creativity and enthusiasm. Their passion has been ignited, and they can barely stop to eat or take breaks. I am constantly hearing "just one more minute, please..." or "can't I just finish this one side up" or my favorite..."I know just what I'm going to make next!"

I have plenty of projects to share with them, but right now I'm just following their lead. They are loving the freedom of making it up as they go along. So...  I guide and advise, unjam machines, offer tips and demonstrate pattern making... so they can stitch freely to their heart's content.
This has unleashed joy, spontaneous collaborations, inspiration from favorite furry friends (Lovely is being spoiled this week!), and true mastery of new skills.
We are calling it GIRL POWER! And say it happily every time a new project is completed or a machine is threaded (not by me).  Some might think that this is just a craft camp... but you and I know the truth. These girls are tasting just how powerful they are. And that's no small thing.

  1. I just wanted to say Thank You! To know that a group of young girls are being given the freedom to explore and express their own, unique sense of power is so inspiring and awesome. It gives me such a wonderful sense of hope and joy to know that people like you exist and are sharing their own power with others in such a whimsical way!

  6. You are teaching them a lifetime skill that gives me a little thrill to see. We lost our mom earlier this year, and my sister and I have often commented how glad we are that she taught us at a young age how to sew. It has served us so well over the years not only in creative projects, but in saving money in mending and altering garments and with that, the deep satisfaction it brings. Rock on Girl Power! :)
