word of the day: simple

In striking contrast to our colorful weekend, we're quite subdued around here today. Directly after I wrote my last post, my daughter developed a high fever (my kids get scorchers). We've been in the thick of it for about 36 hours. I'm just focusing on keeping everything easy. Simple meals, simple activities (for the couch-bound), and simple expectations of what can actually get done. I fought this a bit yesterday, in my sleep-deprived stupor... thinking I could hold onto my quickly dissolving plans for the new week. Not today. I am happily greeting the morning with the goal of simplicity... and looking forward to the countless books I will surely read aloud snuggled under blankets. What is your word for the day? Pin It

  2. Poor little sweetheart & Poor Mommy! It's so hard when our little ones are sick.

But, I think your new word of the day will help make this a memory maker. I can imagine all the fond memories your little one will have & the days when she does the same for her little ones.

There are so many everyday activities that my mother & grandmother passed on to me. Certain songs that I sing that I now hear my kidlets sing to their dolls.

So I think my word of the day will be tradition. Not the fussy ones a year ones. But, the passing on of the simple everyday ones.

  3. progress: even just a little. I hope little lady feels better and maybe you can both get naps. I know when N is sick all he wants is for me to curl around him. Even at independent, almost 6, he wants the comfort. Soup, blanket, mama. Godspeed, friend.

  6. Patience. To deal with administration not appreciating the work I do with my students, or the time I put into art displays around the school.

    Patience.

  7. Good morning! We're in the same boat here, and my son is sporting bright red cheeks. I smiled when I read about your sleep deprivation because minutes ago, I said that we feel like zombies which made us laugh. So laughter is keeping us afloat...along with big helpings of your apple cake. Hugs to you and your fairygirl!

  10. I'm so sorry to hear about your girl! I hope that fever eases soon. You are so wise to remember to let go of the to-do list. Time with Mama will be the best medicine.

My word for today is "open." I just came from a workshop that really challenged me and I am trying to be open to the ideas that were raised.

  19. My word for the day is composure.
Holding it together, being patient, understanding, kind and considerate when being bombarded by fear, concern, information and misinformation, lack of common sense and indecisiveness concerning the H1N1 pandemic. Keep a close eye on your little darling and if she has any difficulty breathing take her immediately to the hospital.

  25. hi maya! i am so sorry to hear your little one is sick... many healing wishes sent your way! i appreciate your post and like the question you have posed. the mantra that is always held close in my heart is 'be here now' if i were to single out this specific day i suppose it would be comfort. the weather is cold, the woodstove is warming us and we wrapped ourselves in blankets while doing handwork feeling colds coming on and wishing it away with soup and vitamin C. i guess it is that time of year!

  26. thanks for all of your wonderful words! now that we're out of the woods, my word for today is productive.

Jessica Jo- I just visited your blog. Congratulations on your new baby. We all feel so inadequate in those first weeks, don't we. It's so overwhelming to be responsible for a new life. I'm sending you love and comfort as you adjust to your new rhythm. I know you are more than enough. Deep Breaths.

  27. Dear Maya, Kids never outgrow needing their moms when they're sick! I just mothered my 26 year old thorugh a bad cold/flu when she arrived in Istanbul for a long-anticipated visit with us (first in a year). Mom's soup and love worked wonders and we finished off the week with lots of fun adventures. Best to you, Peg

  29. Dear Maya,
I am happy that your girl is better now. We had an illness rough patch for many weeks in our home. We've caught a flu, the three of us, but then Zoe and Oz the worst they fell back. It was awful, because there was a time when two sick grownups had to take care of other two sick people, with no possibilities of going to the pharmacy even. And then I got better, but it's been so hard to take care of two all the time, and try to find some peace (Oz has allergies to the trees in our door, so he has been coughing HARD for four months now).
Anyway, I am complaining here too much! What I meant to say is that I hear you, and that I hope you have some rest now that littl miss is better.
    Blessings sent from here!
