soup days

bricks warming
wood blazing
woolens wrapped
rain drumming steadily on the roof
pot simmering
heady scent of garlic and onions
filling in the chinks where the chill threatens to come in
soup days have arrived

I'm not a recipe girl. They definitely get me fired up, but I love nothing more than throwing in what we have and seeing what we get. I do know a bit about portions and spices... that does help. But my soup pot often feels like a cauldron filled with magical surprises. In this way I look for inspiration from ingredients that like to dance together... perhaps unexpectedly... or maybe they're old friends that partner to create a familiar flavor that makes us all sing.... mmmmm yes!

We made an amazing cauliflower chowder with edamame last week that ended up being so good. Let's just say they boogied together in a the most delicious way!

So what are you filling your bowls with these days... any soup plans for the weekend?

  1. Ha, I just prepared your Spicy Sister Stew for lunch today! While my weather is still warm here in the south I still love to have a pot of soup on the stove at this time of year.

  4. We enjoyed Soulemama's broccoli soup last week and butternut squash soup is on the menu for this weekend. I love soup (and especially with a slice of good homemade bread!)

  6. Hi Maya, I found your lovely blog quite by accident today and have spent some time drooling over your beautiful photographs. I'm from Northern Ireland and have been fascinated by your home and surroundings. I will be back to visit again but just wanted to thank you for adding something lovely to my day.My weekend soup is homemade chicken and vegetable broth. Wishing you and your family a relaxing weekend. Ruth

  8. This week we've been eating turkey noodle soup (to use up all the turkey leftover from our Canadian Thanksgiving last weekend). Next week will likely see us dining on a tomatillo corn chowder. I am a recipe person through and through, though I am starting to stray from the recipe now and again. Enjoy your weekend!

  9. I made soup Thursday, and with only two people in my household we've been enjoying many leftovers. The soup I made has butternut squash, wild rice, corn, onions and sausage. I call it 'autumn in a bowl.'

  11. Oh we LOOOOVE soup weather!! Well, at least I love it, and the kids love any reason that causes me to make soup that they can top off themselves (with popcorn, apples, celery, croutons, and bacon!). So last week we all enjoyed Apple Cider Soup!!
