We picked wild blueberries as a child and my best friend's mom made blueberry cake- there is nothing better than fresh blueberry cake-yum! Now those bushes are a mini-mall. Glad you still can pick in the back yard!
We gathered these at a u-pick farm down the road. We're super lucky to live in farm country and come summer, the u-pick farms people drive miles to find are practically in our backyard. The blueberry farmer's secret for not netting is a speaker set up in the trees that randomly sends out the call of a predator bird. The screech keeps the other birds away from the bushes. I believe that it was developed up at Cornell's lab of Ornithology... but I could be wrong.
Lucky you to be able to just go and pick blueberries.....here in Australia the only place we can get them from is the shops. I have planted a little bush so hoping this summer I will be picking some. Love them...yummmmm!
I love blueberries and was going to go picking today but chose the Flea Market instead. Then it was too hot for anything but sitting in the pool. Zizette
Cute pics.

ReplyDeletewonderful! i am jealous that you don't have to net your berries. ours are constantly raided by the birds and chipmunks. what's your secret?
