Thirteen years ago today, my husband and I made a promise to one another. I never doubted for a moment that we would be able to keep it. I know exactly how lucky I am to have a loving marriage. It takes growth, thought, and most of all work. Love comes easily and naturally, those other three are the trickier ones! Last year on this day, I shared my wedding dress. I made it from hemp back in the day when it was quite hard to find. I also made the groom's outfit. Simple white pants and that hemp shirt fluttering in the breeze. Yes, it was not a typical wedding. Funny how much we've changed and grown over the years... and how much we are still just the same. I made his shirt without a pattern... just a lot of measuring and noodling around on my machine.
It's wild to look at all of those little embroidered leaves, and think that I would make it just about the same today, too. Just like I would choose him over any one in the world today, as well. Creating our own traditions in an untraditional way... that would still be us. Just add in a couple of wrinkles and a few gray hairs... and our love story continues.
Happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteToday is also our wedding anniversary..:) Miri

Happy Anniversary! We're approaching our FIRST anniversary in just under a month, and have learned so much about ourselves, each other, and marriage already. We feel so truly blessed!
ReplyDeleteLOVE-ly post!! The embroidery on the shirt is just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary to both of you!!
Happy Anniversary,
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed your blog tremendously! Thank you for sharing all that you have with us. I can tell why you are still married and happy after 13 years. It is evident that you put lots of hard work into your marriage.

Happy Anniversary Maya! A soulmate to have and to hold is certainly the best fuel for our art. You proved this with your "Maya and Love" traditional wedding garments. I think very highly of you for tossing "typical" out the window and going through life based on what feels the best to you. As I type this I can see a picture of your family from yesterday's post. Nature gave you a wonderful gift of it's "Bridal's Wreath" in the background in honor of your celebration. Nostrovia!
ReplyDeleteoh, happy anniversary to you two! i am not surprised that you put so much love and creativity into your wedding. that shirt is perfectly you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! My "word verification" is prompting me to type "ablesser," isn't that funny? So I'll have to say, "Bless your marriage!"
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you both. I love the garments created for your very special day. My wedding was completely DIY at a time when such things were virtually unheard of. We celebrated 26 years together last August. Yep, we were babies when we wed :)
ReplyDeletehappy, happy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary to the two of you. I love the shirt, the dress & the images of you "in the making". Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your anniversary! Warm wishes for continued joy!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! We are approaching 10 years and I have many of the same emotions that you expressed here. I am so impressed you made your own wedding clothes! Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations - What a special day!!! I love your untraditional traditions! May you have many more together!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see that you are
so happy... it is rare this day
and age. We are blessed when we
find our soul mate. And to
many many many more.
We wish your family a wonderful
evening.
I would say Loads of love to you,
but it seams I wont have to today.
I will send you instead warm fuzzy
wishes.

Happy anniversary! I love to read a love story, always. And yours specially. I am so happy for you, that you found your true love and that you are able to recognize it and keep it going everyday. Such a blessing...
ReplyDeleteDo you have a closer picture to the garments, or of you two dreesed up for the wedding? I would love to see that.
Our marriage with Oz was also very atypical, we had a big party after the legal part, in a place we rented that was some kind of cultural center of a friend of ours, and we gave a big concert on the stage! Our band played first, and then during the day, all of our friends musicians (which are a lot!) played one after the other. It was so beautiful! Even the waltz, we danced a tango-like song that I recorded the week before with a friend of ours. Such lovely memories...
Thank you for sharing this and letting us a little into your past, and making me remember some of mine too!
Happy Anniversary! The 26th is my parents' anniversary too - 47 years and going strong. It's great inspiration for us all, I think, to see this enduring love, so congratulations on being such a fine example. And thank you also for such a wonderful blog...so far today you have provided me with dinner (Cold Miso Noodles with Asparagus) AND a pattern for sleep masks for my kids. You are a rock star to me!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! I am so happy for you!
ReplyDeleteMaya, you made me cry at work! I think you and your whole family are just such special people, and your marriage is certainly blessed. Once again you are inspiring me--this time to look forward to my won marriage and hope it is as happy as yours is!
