clearing

Spring cleaning is happening in full force around here. I'm pausing briefly to encourage you to join me in getting rid of what's been weighing you down. This post is for me, as much as for anyone else who needs the message that "you are enough". Do not let your stuff define you. I am getting rid of decades of unnecessary belongings and household items that no longer serve me. Making piles, filling boxes, and clearing the clutter. Letting it go.

Because I live in the watery depths of my emotions, I have held onto the belief that each item has a story worth telling. Well, let's get real. Some do and some truly don't. I'm being ruthless. Purging with wild abandon! Do I really need that extra popcorn maker my ex in-laws gave us a million years ago? My goodness, the amount of junk that accumulates within a lifetime. My new found freedom has unleashed me from my need to hold onto things for that rainy day. The storm came... and all that was necessary were my wits. So out with the old. You don't need a storm to wash away your extra debris. Just a little reminder. You are enough. Say it with me... "I am enough. My stuff does not define me. I'm letting go."
Ahhh... it feels so good to create space and lighten the load. Happy spring cleaning, my friends!

  2. I really needed to read this today. We just moved halfway across the country into an apartment less than half the size of the house we left. I purged like crazy before we left but there still isn't enough space for all our stuff. It is truly liberating to be free of what weighs us down, but what I am parting with now is the sentimental stuff. It is hard work.

  3. You are wise beyond your years. That "stuff" gets heavier and heavier as time passes, so why not lighten the load now? Those are such beautiful images you've made up there and the words on them are perfect. You are indeed enough!

  4. ooh, I'm looking for a popcorn popper! lol. Yes, it feels so good to get rid. We've been doing lots of that because of our recent move. SO good to remember that things do not define us, I say take a picture and heave ho! Eventually even the picture will seem extraneous too. :)

  6. We are downsizing from a big home, all four kids have grown and hatched out into the world. The house will go on the market in a few weeks and we'll be moving to our tiny place in VT. We are getting rid of SO MUCH STUFF! We've taken bags to the thrift shop, Goodwill, the transfer station and we've loved Freecycle. It is hard, hard work, letting go of years of family stuff, but it's incredibly freeing at the same time.

It's good to remember that "the important things in life are not things". We look forward to living more simply.

I am glad you are feeling the freedom too, Maya. xo

  7. Yesterday while the kids were at school I had a big clear out and reclaimed some space. The kids were so happy to have more space to play and they can find their things now. It's so cathartic isn't it!

  8. Living in an apartment with no garage, no attic, guest room or spare room, has helped me not getting more than I can store or display. But a reminder is always welcomed ! Thanks my friend ! oxox

  11. Excellent timing (again) Maya! I pulled out some boxes of craft supplies today and have been making the bits and pieces into gifts! Feels good to use up these things that I've been hanging on for "one day". One day was today!
    Happy cleaning!

  13. Yep, been in spring cleaning mode here too... a large family gathering tomorrow helped motivate me :o) Gotten rid of a few things this week, but really need to get more serious about that. You're so right, it is amazing what one accumulates over the course of a lifetime. Good to let go. Thanks for the reminder.

  14. If you feel your mojo running low, grab "Throw Out 50 Things" from the library. It has great tips to help you decide what you really want to surround you and what you don't.

PS I love the look and sentiment of your whale art

  15. this is funny as its autumn here but those same feelings are happening to me. This week I had had enough and declared it all had to go! We live in a small fairly neat house, but the picking up I had to do, and I knew all my cupboards were full no matter how good I was at storing the stuff. Filled 12 medium garbage bags yesterday and cleaned out spots that normally dont get cleaned (linen cupboards, behind the piano, under beds, girls hiding places etc. Deep cleaning is a hard process (it makes a bigger mess than you started with!?! and takes a long time) but I feel great today!!

  16. You are a beautiful person. I loved this - and I needed it. Not the clutter bit so much but the I am enough bit - I really needed that bit today.

  17. Letting go can be so darn hard though! I'm a sentimental and a crafter, and I find it so hard to let go of things that have a connection to some memorie or someone in my past, or letting go of all those goodies that I just may be able to re-purpose into something else in the future...truth is, you're right. I don't need to hold on to all those things, I need to de-clutter my closets, my home, and my thoughts. Thanks for the lovely reminder that..."I am enough."
