fowl play
Two days ago I went out to our deck and almost sat down on an EGG! What was an egg doing on the wicker couch?! It was small and white. Only one of our hens lays that sort: Sweetie. But the deck is fenced in and not anywhere the chickens have ever roamed. But there it was. I imagined her searching for a quiet spot, peeking between the rails, and then spotting that soft, comfy corner to nestle in. We all had a good laugh about it and wished we had caught her in the act. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon. We had friends over and I pulled up the above pic on instagram to show them. Cuz doesn't everyone instagram their chicken escapades to share with guests? That's when I read the latest comment which referred to chicken habits... once they lay an egg in an unusual spot, be prepared for a repeat performance. I ran to check the couch.... lo and behold, Sweetie was just getting comfortable! You've got to admire a mama who knows how to find the best possible place to lay her egg. She's one smart hen!

That is too funny! I guess you need to watch where you sit from now on. :)
ReplyDeleteha! yes, indeed!
DeleteThat is one smart mama!
ReplyDeleteoh yeah!
Deletegiggling. these chickens are such happiness, right? women. they do their own thing. and is there anything more precious than those tiny white ones that come out so clean? i covet them. my family had to wait forever for eggs the first few months because i insisted on blowing them, i didn't want to destroy the shells. i had this dream of a very-anthropologie curtain of eggs hanging from my studio ceiling. the four males i live with thought that was just rude. love you. counting down to our time. ;)
ReplyDeletea curtain of eggs?! only you would think of that... love it! see you in a matter of weeks, it's true.
DeleteOh my goodness!! How cute. What a smart mamma! That looks like a lovely and comfy place to lay an egg. If I were a chicken, I'd follow Sweetie's lead.
ReplyDeleteSweetie probably thought if Maya and her babies enjoy this spot, I bet me and my babies will too. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart girl!
ReplyDeleteSweetie says "but it's oh, so soft.."
ReplyDeleteSweetie is one smart chick!! How funny!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute - do chickens tend to lay at the same time of day?
ReplyDeleteours do... it varies, but they seem to have a fairly regular rhythm.
DeleteOh she is a sweetie isn't she!? I love living my chicken dreams through those that have them! I'm not a farmer but would love to have a few hens one day.

They are funny these birds. One of our ducks goes into the rabbit hutch and hides underneath the entrance and lays her eggs. She even kicks the rabbits out if they are in her way during the day! Determined fowl! xox
ReplyDeletemy kids loved hearing about your duck!
DeleteSo sweet!
ReplyDeleteha ha! Pretty funny! And the title is a great play on words!

Sweetie sure picked a comfy spot! She's a Speckled Sussex, right? We have Speckled Sussex, Welsummers, Ameraucanas, Marans and Buckeyes, but the Sussex are my faves.
ReplyDeleteyes she is. we have one buckeye and four buff orpingtons, as well.
Deleteoh that's too funny, she really does know what's best! what a cute looking hen she is.
ReplyDeleteso funny and lovely story:) you just made my day:)
ReplyDeleteI love it! And I love the green gingham cushion covers! Actually now that I think about it, they look familiar. You didn't reinvent them from sheets you got at Mimi's, did you? Nice to see you at Wegmans the other day, finally. I wished I had had time to say hello, but I was cutting it awfully close time-wise! I look forward to more chicken stories, so much fun!
ReplyDeleteWebsite is very comprehensive and informative. I have enjoyed the visit. From www.flowerstousa24x7.com

ReplyDeleteWould you mind telling what kind of camera you use? Your photography is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI use a canon gll or my iphone with the instagram app. The photos above were just with my iphone... so thanks for admiring them. I tend to grab it more these days because it's just so handy.
DeleteHahahaha! I just.love.your.chicken. She sure is a smart one.
ReplyDeleteI had a little white hen that was quite independent. She left eggs wherever she happened to be. She inspired my children's book, Tillie Lays an Egg. Stories abound when you have hens!
ReplyDeleteSweetie is not only a smart, but also a beautiful hen!!! I only discovered your blog this morning and I just love it! Your stories, but also the way you re- or upcycle stuff!! Absolutely wonderful! Love, Alexandra
