garden dreams

Whenever I create a new design, my first focus is function. I make what I need. I would always rather create it than buy it. It was just this way many months ago when I came up with the Reclaimed Burlap Garden Trug for Taproot's first issue. And now, we're so close to the moment when we'll  put it to USE! Our strange, mild winter has warmed into an incredibly early spring. What a wonderful gift for this mama who can't wait to get back into her garden again! After more than a decade of diligent vegetable growing, I gave it up completely last year to write Reinvention. I had never even put my beds to rest thoroughly- not so good. It's a wild and intimidating jungle out there. But I'm going to use this head start the earth is offering and get my hands dirty. Like so many children, mine were not always the most enthusiastic helpers out there.  But they've missed it too!  Our CSA was great... truly, but there is nothing like picking your own dinner right outside your door. They've been planning along side me, especially my littlest tomato eater. She wants her own bed filled with purple flowers and sungold tomatoes. We can do that! There are months to go before we can really plant the fun stuff, but this weekend will be the beginning of reawakening our garden... in fact, I already donned my Mucks this morning for a quick initial weeding. Oh how I love a good weeding session! Do you have garden dreams? Are you looking at your seed packets longingly, too?

  1. I got a jump start on cleaning out the flower beds earlier this week and can't wait to get the veggie garden prepped! Dreaming of fresh veggies and herbs with beautiful bouquets of flowers on the table every day.I love the changing of the seasons!

  2. We planted peas yesterday and beets this morning before a rain came in. On the next warm day we'll plant the spinach - and then we really ought to wait until May for all the good stuff. It's been awesome out there with our hands in the dirt and the sun on our backs. :-)

  3. Oh yes! I love hearing what you're all growing or going to grow. We're devoting an entire bed to strawberries this year, too!

  4. On the dry days we're out digging around too, the peas are already planted and the perennial spinach has been doing very well! The side yard needs the most attention this year and as our office looks directly out to it I've been planning from my office chair! The weather is teasing us today it's rainy for a bit and then the sun comes out and then back to rain!
Enjoy your garden this year Maya!

  5. I decided that, for now, gardening is not for me even though I wish I had the time and talent for it! Our lawn did just spontaneously sprout primulas though so I am happy! I am sure you will enjoy your time in the garden all the more after taking a break last year.

Love your daughter's sweater dress by the way :)

  6. Yes, yes! Dreaming and planting, today we started our vegetable seeds. We have a tiny garden. Just enough for a few plants. I think we can plant them very soon, our issue in NM is the Spring winds -it wilts & dries everything out.

Loved your article in Taproot. Love the magazine! I received a complimentary issue from Nova Naturals and now I think I'm hooked.

  7. I most definitely have gardening aspirations this year. Two days ago I had the opportunity to clean the flower beds and am looking forward to starting an herb garden this year.

  8. It's hard to concentrate on work because I can't stop thinking about the garden! I want to build a small greenhouse too to get everything going. We've been weeding and tilling, getting ready to empty out the compost and turn it in to the garden soil. It feels so good to work outside again.

  10. Yes Yes Yes!! The packets are practically leaping out of the little basket box and in to my hands of their own accord. I'll be in the greenhouse this weekend dropping them in to some fresh potting soil. Hooray for Spring!

  12. Cute! I have some of the burlap strapping with red edges but have yet to find a project for it - I'll have to make something like this soon!
