The best Christmas gift we ever received arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected... a little over six years ago! Has it really been so long since our determined, creative, silly, and oh so sweet girl surprised us with her holiday birth? I'm grateful for each day that we've shared together, and as much as I'd love her to stay little, I'm so very proud of the many ways she has grown. Having a birthday this time of year makes for a lot of celebrating... and adds so much extra magic to the season.
My favorite annual gift to my daughter is also a gift to me. The week following her birthday is filled with quiet time together. All of my big projects and work are put aside, there are plenty of leftovers in the fridge, and lots of extra hands to help around the house... I'm all hers. So right now: we're writing stories, doing lots of art together and many chapters are being read out loud... to me! When I think back to my own childhood, it's not the things I remember so much as the special moments of my mother close at my side.
I'll share some of the pencils we've been working on tomorrow...
My six-year-old arrived six weeks early, and I remember my husband holding this wee little baby and telling him that we'd gotten six extra weeks with him, what a bonus. Happy birthday to you both!
ReplyDelete(And every year, as we travel along the calendar from his real birthday to his should-have-been birthday, I'm surprised all over again by how long six weeks really is. Do you do that too? Enjoy your bonus weeks together!!)

Thanks for all the b-day wishes!
ReplyDelete*amy @ kids in the studio- We certainly DO feel like we got bonus time with EACH of our children... who were both 51/2 weeks early! A mystery still... but we have our theories. We also believe that they just couldn't wait to get here. And yes, when due dates finally arrive, I am infinitely amazed at how much time that actually is! Love knowing you have a 6 year old, too.

Dear Maya Happy Birthday to your girl - sorry for being late. Six seems like a wonderful age...she's beautiful on all the pictures I've seen. Special! Our first son is three and a half years old, and our second son is due in mid April. It's so wonderful to see kids grow and be.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday from all of us! So glad you get to have some extra lovely, quiet time together. I'm definitely going to have to show her picture to my little guy and see if he recognizes those beautiful eyes :o)
ReplyDeleteYour daughter's birthday is on the 29th? That is when my son was born. He was 11 days early. I LOVE that his birthday is right in the middle of Christmas and New Year's. It's the perfect spot for my Finn who turned 11 years old.
