New/Old Sewing Machine# 2- My Featherweight

featherweight
Did you wonder if there was a #2 (new/old) sewing machine? Why, yes. When my mother moved to a smaller apartment, the idea of having three sewing machines seemed ludicrous.

This Singer Featherweight is identical to the one she grew up sewing on, my grandmother's. My mom bought it for parts and as a back-up. Now, it's living with me! When I mentioned that I might need to bring some portable sewing machines to Squam, my mother was in the process downsizing. Timing is everything, isn't it?

And now it's official: I am a collector of sewing machines. This featherweight makes my grand total:  five machines... but whose counting, right? If you're going to collect something that takes up space, it certainly seems more justifiable if it's useful and will be shared by others.

Oh, and I've rarely mentioned the fifth... my old Kenmoore is up in the attic waiting for a tune up and my daughter's readiness. Thanks for your Elna tips yesterday. They were excellent! I guess I'll be researching Featherweights, too. Pin It

Alphabet Glue winners!

It was great to hear all of your childhood favorite reads. As I didn't specify an age, it was interesting to find how many focused on  the chanpter books they read to themselves. This hadn't even crossed my mind, and I was somehow thinking the responses would be about mostly young children's literature. I love when you surprise me. It was fun and refreshing to hear titles I hadn't thought about in decades. Thank you! And just to clarify, although I adored The Little House on the Prairie series when I was little, and then with my son, and now with my daughter... the book I spoke of is The Little House.  Here's a picture in case you don't know this oldie but goody. It's a gem! I had to read it over again last night. Happy tears every time.

So are you ready to get your Alphabet Glue on? Here are the four lucky winners:

I am loving these e-magazines. They are soooo useful! I don't think I can actually pick a favorite book. We had no television growing up so all we did was read. I do remember reading the Narnia series over and over though.

Congratulations! Shoot me an e-mail and I'll forward it right over to Annie. Thanks!

New/Old Sewing Machine# 1- My Elna

elna
I mentioned a while back that my mother sent some wonderful things in the mail. This unassuming industrial looking box was what I got most excited about. I had an idea of what was inside, but how to get it out was quite mysterious. Hmmm? A hinge?
elna 2
Maybe if we turn it this way we can take a peek.
elna 3
Ahhh here she is... my lovely little grasshopper!
elna 4
She came with a tin box of parts and a charming diagram of how to thread written in an old- fashioned hand.
elna 5
This vintage sewing machine was the first ever produced by Elna, a Swiss manufacture, beginning in the 1930's. It was nicknamed The Grasshopper because of its color, and that fold up knee bar only adds to the insect impression. They all come with a sturdy case, which turns into a fantastic sewing table instantly!
my new gorgeous grasshopper
I am obviously in love with her sweet looks, but the lightweight, portability factor is a big reason for my mother shipping her across the country. If I can get my little grasshopper running smoothly, she will be accompanying me to my sewing workshops in June at Squam. I'm looking forward to sharing her! Now, it's time to research where to find a new cord and manual. Any suggestions are always helpful! Pin It

Alphabet Glue and another giveaway!

It's Monday and the beginning of a fresh new week. I have so much planned... some for me and some for you. Have you noticed an increase in amazing giveaways around here? It seems that the higher my plate is heaped with (mostly fun) stuff, the more fantastic emails I get from friends asking if they can offer my readers something special.

So let's continue with some more giving. Have you heard about Alphabet Glue, yet? Annie, of Bird and Little Bird, has just launched a new quarterly e-magazine that is so perfectly up my alley... and I'm guessing many of yours. Activities for kids who love books (and their grown-ups)? Oh yes, please! We love to read around here... books on shelves,  in stacks, overflowing baskets, left on the stairs, piles on the counter... We all read LOTS! Annie is a mother, special education and literacy teacher, and a crafter. She has excellent taste in children's literature(and I'm quite picky)  and always has fun book ideas... from what to read next to different ways to make your own books (you know I love that).

 a reading list for spring
do-it-yourself library catalog cards
mix and match story cards
a printable reading record
a library scavenger hunt
tiny box accordion book tutorial
felt bracelet book tutorial
paper story character houses
wildflower seed pods

I'm not surprised that her latest project, Alphabet Glue, is wonderful and just right for little book lovers... and even those littles you'd like to entice to become a book lover. Great stuff!
I know for sure because Annie was good enough to send me a preview copy. Thank you! I've tucked it up my sleeve to pull out during spring break in a couple of weeks... although I might not be able to wait to share the mix and match story cards. Annie also would love to give a copy away to four of you!  So please leave a comment in this post before Wednesday at 9pm EST and I'll randomly select four winners for Thursday morning. You can leave any comment at all, but I'd love to hear what some of your favorite childhood books were. One of mine was and still is The Little House.

Sewing School: pandas and a pig

sewing pandas
I gave Sewing School to my daughter for her 6th birthday. We had fun looking through it initially, but it's been collecting dust for months. "I don't like to sew," she said the few times I brought it up. CRINGE. I kept my reaction to myself... hoping she'd come around, because it's such a fabulous book. In fact, it's one of  the best introductions to sewing for children I've seen. I was certain that she'd take to it, but I waited quietly. Tuesday night after dinner she picked it up. I held my breath. "Will you read this with me, Mama?"  My casual "Let's" had a giddiness just beneath the surface. She realized instantly that her reading skills had improved immensely since the last time she'd opened it up. Being able to read the step by step instructions really excited her, but the speech bubbles filled with quotes from real young sewers sealed the deal. This page, in particular, got her itching to hold a needle and thread.
stuffies 3
As an avid stuffed animal collector, the idea of designing and making her own stuffie was inspiring.

We had all the materials needed, and she proceeded to read aloud each step before doing it.
stuffies 2
Bedtime was nearing, but she was so enthusiastic. And we all know that feeling of not being able to stop. I let her keep going. Proudly using the whipstitch for the first time, she completed her mama and baby panda and climbed into bed with them. A little later than usual... but happy as could be.

And what were her final words before falling asleep? "Can I sew another tomorrow"

Well, that snow day provided just the right backdrop for her next stuffie... she's calling him Pigalicious... and he's covered in mud.

snow and a winner

Thanks so much for all of your blogiversary wishes. Yesterday was a funny one. I was totally thrown off by our unexpected snow day. We always have snow in March, but this storm caught me off guard. Now, on with spring and all green things.  I can't wait for mud, the return of peepers... and turtles coming out of hiding. Wasn't Silk Oak's new turtle design wonderful?

three!

measure
Today maya*made turns three. What an amazing ride it's been so far! Several years ago, I had been hungry for an adventure and in need of a way to channel my creative energy. This blog has been all of that and so much more. It has strengthened my confidence, shaped a career, and given me what feels like an unofficial degree in craft/design/marketing.  But most of all, it has graced me with you. I'm so humbled that you stop in regularly to peek at what I'm up to, grateful that you email little love notes which keep me going, and always excited to hear your thoughts and comments. It seems fitting to invite you into my studio today.
studio light
Well, actually it's my studio a couple of weeks ago when I could see the floor and didn't need to move piles just to cut fabric! It's a good visual reminder to me that order will return again, and that the chaotic state it's currently in, is a perfect representation of the hard work I'm doing behind the scenes. It will be such a relief to share my book details (hopefully some hints in the fall), but know this: I have hoarded and saved my very best ideas and it's thrilling to see them all lined up in one spot. THRILLING! The first book photo shoot is around the corner, and I'm beside myself!
straightened studio
Back to the place where all the magic happens... yes, my inspiration boards are bursting. That's how my mind always feels, so better to get it out and up on the wall so that I can sleep at night.

Now I'm off to sort out what projects to entice my children with... it's a snow day (we live at the north pole, it seems)  and another opportunity to hone my balancing act skills.

Thank you for hanging out with me all of these years, and if you are a new friend: welcome and come on in! Pin It

Big Little Felt Universe: a review and giveaway!

    Big Little Felt Universe
What a week! I am very ready for something light and fun. Today's giveaway is just that. I'm asked to review a lot of books these days(awesome, right?), but this one arrived on my doorstep as a surprise. Editors, Kathleen and Linda, at Lark Crafts just had a feeling I'd be interested in Big Little Felt Universe. I have not dappled in the art of felt food, so I had a moment of skepticism. Any doubts flew away the moment I flipped through the first few pages. My six year old, who was at my side, began ooohing and ahhhhing instantly. In fact, she's never responded so enthusiastically to any of my "mama craft" books. We went through it cover to cover and were both equally inspired. Why? Big Little Felt Universe is beautifully organized into a wide variety of play accessories and soft toys that would excite any child and a clean, simple aesthetic that appealed to this very opinionated mother/crafter. The book contains 12 play sets with several components to make for each one.
    Big Little Felt Universe
The veggies are gorgeous, but there are also so many other fun felt toys I had never seen before and here is the list of sets:
    1. cake
    2. camping
    3. sundae
    4. office
    5. plants
    6. holiday
    7. veggies
    8. doctor
    9. grill
    10. purse
    11. fruits
    12. tools
For instance, the camping set (that we LOVED!!) includes: logs and flames for a campfire, s'mores, compass, pocket knife and lantern.
    Big Little Felt Universe

Each felt piece (from the stethoscope to stapler) is cleverly designed and comes with very easy to understand step by step (photographed) instructions.  The templates are life size. That's the best part... you can just start making everything right away. No scaling or sizing... just get right to cutting felt. This would be an amazing book for a mother of young children who wanted to move away from plastic and increase the handmade toys in their home. It's also perfect for the dramatic play areas in classrooms with young children... especially because you can make multiples of everything. I also imagine older kids with simple hand sewing skills would be thrilled to pour through the pages knowing that they could make it all.
    Big Little Felt Universe
Author, Jeanette Lim,  has put the utmost thought and care into crafting a book that's enticing and accessible. She even slipped in a gift for her reviewer to enjoy... a watermelon slice directly from page 149.
    Big Little Felt Universe
And as much as I am the "book reviewer", my daughter's "jumping up and down" enthusiasm has played a huge role in how highly I'm recommending the Big Little Felt Universe!

So, you can imagine how happy I am that Lark sent an additional copy for me to give to one of you. Oh, yes! Please leave a comment here between now and Sunday night at 8pm EST. A random winner will be picked and announced on Monday morning. I'm happy to ship this book anywhere, so please join in... just be sure there is a way to contact you either in your profile or the comment itself. Thank you Lark and thank you Jeanette! Good luck!
