did you know...?

Charley Harper's beautiful wildlife illustrations are now being featured in a children's holiday collection at... Old Navy. Huh? One of Old Navy's designers, Todd Oldham, worked with Harper on a book before he passed away in 2007. He encouraged Old Navy to create a children's line of t-shirts, board books, and more for all of their stores. I feel like I have to excuse/defend myself for being at the mall... my cell phone battery died... but I'm so glad I was! Look at this fantastic coloring book I got:

I steer away from coloring books( and opt for more open-ended art projects), but I'm hoping my daughter will share this with ME! This is a present I 'll tuck away in the growing stockpile of fourth birthday gifts I'm making and collecting for her. I'd like to add this next one to the list, but I think we have enough memory games. It looks beautiful, doesn't it?

If you'd like to see the entire collection, click here.

I know you come here for ideas on making...not buying, so I have a suggestion. Please, start saving all of your empty toilet paper rolls. Paper towel rolls will work, also. I have a holiday tutorial coming up, and I want you to be ready with supplies. Here's a clue, some of you may want to have it ready by the first day of December. That's all I'll say for now. I hope you have a great start to your week.

  3. No, I didn't know! Thanks so much for posting; I think I would have missed this entirely if I hadn't seen it here. Charley Harper is my favorite modern artist. I need to get my hands on that coloring book - I suddenly have a vision of embroidering Charley Harper work for all over the house.

  6. I absolutely love Charley Harper's work.

And oh, trust me, I will be ready for crafting! I have a ton of toilet paper rolls saved for composting, so I can use a few of those for your tutorial. Can't wait to see what you'll come up with! :)

  7. Whoo, what a find! I love Charley Harper and would never have guessed that he'd be featured at Old Navy, though I had read about Todd Oldham's love affair with Harper's art. I hope the coloring book ends up in my stocking cuz Alli is on to something in her comment--I can see an embroidered Harper piece in every room!

If your tutorial for . . . hmmm . . . something to use on Dec. 1 is big enough to hold a book, then I'm totally with you. If not, I have to keep thinking about my idea.

  9. Those are lovely! I cringe a little at Old Navy, but on the other hand, its nice when cool stuff becomes available to the masses. Fun!

  10. Are you going to be making a menorah with toilet tubes and construction paper?

  11. Not a menorah... but the toilet paper roll tutorial will work for Christmas, Chanukah, or Solstice.

  12. I teach in a high school, and I'm always tempted to snag the empty toilet paper rolls from our floor's bathroom, but then I always think it's "icky". But using our own family bathroom rolls is somehow okay. So you're going to make some sort of countdown calendar ;) Will the tubes look like candles?

  13. i'm going to buy myself a coloring book! the lines are so crisp and clean. i am already imagining appliques. and i have a funny story regarding a toilet paper tube in the toilet - but it might be distasteful here. remind me later.

  16. Thanks for the head's up on Old Navy. I don't make it over there very often, but I love Charles Harper. I've got some dishes by him, and a couple of books and a print. I love how colorful the memory game you posted is.
