We created many things during week of earth*craft, but what got the biggest "wow" and "cool" factor was definitely creating hot waxed rocks with our lake stones. Done the traditional way, this is not a craft for the faint of heart, nor super young... and takes a watchful adult eye. But for the the responsible 8 and 9 year old, the hint of danger makes it super exciting.
In essence, you take old crayons and melt them on hot rocks baked in an oven. Sounds simple- and it is. However the process is irresistible and the end results were so beautiful that they flew home with their makers before I could get too many pictures.
On the hottest day of all, we baked the rocks directly in the sun. This would makes it a bit safer for younger set, but the wax doesn't melt in quite the same gorgeous way.

I love the rock idea, I did the melting of crayon and we used canvas (expensive) and a blow dryer. It was lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking back, and I'm glad you had fun with it! It really is so very magical. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. My two are always bringing home interesting rocks. Now we've got a use for them. Thanks for the great idea.
ReplyDeleteoh what a cool idea. The result is quite facinating :)
ReplyDeleteMust remember it to when I once get kids in 10 years or so;)
Or maybe I will just do it myself!
