ditch diving

Daylilies, wild Sweet Peas, Crown Vetch, Buttercups... they're all begging to come home with me... to fill up every vase in the house. Our summers are brief, but they're heavenly.
Today I had the first chunk of time to myself in weeks. I was very excited to jump into the millions of new projects I've been planning... but the flowers called me away. They said "stay out and play with us... it's been far too rainy to be inside... enjoy this beautiful day." So I listened! So happy I did, because I realized that I could invite you too. Isn't it amazing that I can bring my countrside right to your home. Let's go!

  1. Thanks for sharing your flower day! I've been in front of the computer all day, but I think there's still a little time to go out and play. Maybe I will. . . .

  4. I really needed this today, in July I often want to be out of NYC picking wildflowers! This looks just lovely. Thank you so much for linking to my work on your blog, knowing that people are responding to my paintings means so much! I have been enjoying your blog and coming by often, I especially liked the tent and club house that you posted this week...my kids would freak out over both of those! You really seem to be fully loving your country life. Wonderful to feel that spirit in your posts!

  6. We have big, beautiful sunflowers blooming all along the roadside here right now. You have encouraged me to take advantage! I just need to remember to take scissors with me in the car next time I go out.

  8. Wow wow wow! Maya... your voice!!! I never thought it could be so sweet and soft. I always pictured it in my head as a strong heavy voice. Why? Who knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Hi, dear friend.
(Next time, you need to film your face while talking, that would be a blast!)

  9. I forgot to say that yesterday I was about to work on the studio, but Oz and Zoe started singing that we were going to the park. I couldn't resist the invitation, and it was great! All day long under the sun with playground games, mate and homemade cookies on the grass and the view of the river Río de la Plata.

  10. I already had the pleasure of experiencing your buttercup soft and sweet voice. Lucky me!!
I loved your little video but what is especially cool is that I had my i tunes open and the song playing in the background to your wonderful voice was friends they are jewels off the new Iron and Wine CD.
    Synchronicity !!!
I went for a drive and walk at dusk today and did a little ditch diving of my own collecting everything you mentioned and some black eyed susans and native grasses. I also saw so much wildlife on this hot summer night ( a grouse family, wild turkeys, a young buck with beautiful antlers and the most adorable little skunk family.
    Have a lovely weekend Maya.

  14. There's nothing a florist can put together that is prettier than a bouquet of wildflowers! I have 2 mason jars filled with daisies, bee balm, dill sprigs, mint, lemon balm and a few batchelor buttons..... They make me HAPPY!

  17. thanks for that!

It's so hot and humid and buggy down here (I'm very sensitive to mosquitos) that I feel confined in doors from June to September. I've got tropical flowers and grapefruits and lychees, and that's awesome, but I missed my Spring completely, and long for the cool grass and crisp nights of the northeast. A little bit of the summer up there is wonderful.
