lovelies

The above photo is one last little bit of loveliness I forgot to share. The pendent (a vintage shop light) above my mother's bed needed some softening. Amazing what a little organza apron can do!

I'm so happy that we could all enjoy the barn together this week! Both my mother and I thank you deeply for your generous and kind words. I was quite shy about publishing the Grandma Bunny post and was totally taken by surprise by how much it touched so many of you. I think we are all yearning for more magic, little surprises, things that make us sigh. I found that feeling last night when I watched this video by the lovely and talented Amy Krouse Rosenthal. She is a very gifted and prolific children's book author who tapped into our collective desire for extra-ordinary moments. I had heard the title of her mini documentary bouncing around the blogosphere, but hadn't checked it out until Kathreen of Whip Up mentioned it for the second time. I admire and respect anything that she promotes, so off I went. Now I'm sending you. This little You Tube video is about making spontaneous art, and strangers coming together to create the unexpected... it is about loveliness. Please view it and consider how you might make something... anything lovely this weekend.

Amy is preparing to do a full length film about all things lovely. She has put out an invitation to YOU, and January 20th is the final day for submissions. Check here and scroll about half way down for info on submitting your own lovelies. I will be sending her Grandma Bunny's tale for consideration in the Real Story category... just for fun!

  2. Thank you for sharing the magic, beauty, and joy of your home and your mother's barn-home (which reminds me of Mary Wilkins Freeman's story "The Revolt of Mother" in a lovely way) with all of us--especially in these single-digit temps!

  8. What an oasis of peace that image is, Maya. The apron does such a lovely job diffusing the light, and it looks like a sculpture in its own right.

I just watched the Beckoning the Lovely video and bawled over it. How beautiful, and what a sweet, inventive soul Amy is to bring so many people into her world of creativity and play. Thank you for sharing the link!

  10. sorry to sounds like "mom" but that organza won't burn up from the heat will it? It looks so delicate... I ask because I have a friend who thought it was safe to put a blanket over the light in her baby's nursery when she had to get up with her in the middle of the night so it wouldn't be so bright... but the blanket got real hot! It was a little scary...Just looking out for a lovely blogger!

  16. What a great bunny. She looks so soft and huggable. Even in my thirties I have childhood toys stuffed away in a box and the one I cherish most is the frog I made with my mother. Handmade toys and collectables are the best gifts of all.

  18. It's incredible what repurposing can do -- especially at THE barn! :) The apron looks romantic and divine.

P.S. It was so lovely to hear from your mum! When I read the email, I was so excited to hear from THE maya*made mom!

  21. Oh my goodness...I've just found your lovely, inspiring blog, and I am eating up every word and image. I *love* your grandma bunny story. My mom sewed a bear for me when I was a little girl, and she is still one of my most prized possessions today - even with a missing eye and crooked mouth. It reminds me of the Velveteen Rabbit - the love (of the maker and of the child who receives it) gets wrapped up in every stitch, and it's not just a toy anymore, it's a bit of magic.

Also - I've just clicked over and watched The Beckoning of Lovely, and it was amazing. I think we're all kind of yearning for someone to draw us out and help us do something creative, and Amy did just that. Thank you so much for sharing.
