thrifting season

They've begun: garage sales, auctions, flea markets! I try to be good, but remember that I am daughter to the Garage Sale Queen! It's in my genes. No choice, I say. I am rather selective and really only go to a handful a year. Sunday I had a field day at a flea market a couple of miles away from my house. The theme seemed to be Robin's egg blue and organization.
Little sewing drawers...

40's tablecloth, pitchers, paper sorting shelf, wooden boxes..

and my dream vintage sewing machine!

Love that light... the bulb still works!

It even came with the original manual and attachments.

This will go down as one my best scores, ever! Are you a thrifter, too? What's one of your favorite treasures that you've picked up at a sale? Pin It

I just scored big time last weekend. I found a vintage 70's Olivetti typewriter and an Italian tea cart. I put up pics in this post:

  4. This is a score like you hardly EVER come across. Super exciting! It is in amazing condition for it's age. It does look new. I always wonder about the person who had owned such a thing. They obviously cared for it. What did they sew? What were they like?

One of my favorite treasures is a vintage pyrex mixing bowl, (which we actually ended up finding 2 of, over a span of about 5 or 6 years) and any/all of our 1940s vintage fire king glass cookware. We use it daily!

  5. Oh! Wonderful! Can I come next time?! :)

I love those pitchers! They woul go perfectly with my favourite Fleamarket-find ever: a bright yellow 1940s teapot in exactly the same stile!!!

And of course I'm a little jealous of that vintage Singer... Are you going to try it?

Best wishes and have fun this Fleamarket-season! I miss them a bit, as they don't organize much of them here in Italy... In Belgium on the other hand, I used to work accross the street from DAILY flea-market. Just imagine that... Temptation Square!

  8. Great score! It would be hard in the area you live to limit your hunting. We grew up hitting the garage sales and flea markets as well. You did a great job! That is my favorite color combo too!

I gravitate toward the wooden drawers and shelves...and old books with great illustrations. Linens are also hard to resist. How fun for you is that sewing machine??? Love it!!

  9. I LOVE that singer! I'm not very good at finding things like that, so live vicariously through others...

  10. I would have to say the vintage tin filled with handmade lace trims , some over a hundred years old is my most recent favorite score. I love thrifting :)

  12. I love your finds!! I am so glad the weather is getting warmer and the garage sales are going to be so much fun! I love finding old ceiling tin, ironstone, toleware and old furniture that I can "freshen up" for next to nothing!! Take care, Caroline

  16. I am a mad thrifter! I recently had my best thrifting adventure ever and blogged about it here:
    http://lilfishstudios.blogspot.com/2009/05/meant-to-be.html

I collect antique dough bowls and this one waited almost three years for me.

I'm always on the lookout for wooden bowls, wool and leather for crafting, and any other little thing that might spark creativity but I really admire your idea of a list of things whether that be color or function to keep you focused. Perhaps if I did that my studio would have space for um, working.... :D

  17. I love the sewing machine. It is beautiful.

One of my best finds was this old rocking chair that the seat had been burned up. It was covered in all soot from the fire, but it was very sturdy. They were only asking $5 dollars for it. When I got it home and cleaned it up I found a beautiful chair underneath. I made a new seat for it and it is now one of my favorite pieces of furniture in my house.

Thrift stores and garage sales are great!

  18. Thrifting is my favorite part of the week! I just found my own vintage sewing machine this last weekend. A pink atlas, and I love it. It needs a little work but I have high hopes. http://threebirdies.blogspot.com/2009/05/pink-atlas-sewing-machine.html I love your finds. Just beautiful.

  19. I LOVE garage sale-ing and am determined to make it to a few this year. Our region doesn't have much that is vintage, having been settled mostly in the last 50 years, but I have bought ALL my sewing machines at garage sales, and I got a lovely 1958 pale green Singer for $30. It too had all the attachments. The one I use now is from the 70's - I needed to upgrade to one with a zigzag stitch! Also el cheapo from a garage sale.

  20. I love thrifting. And I love that color blue. Anytime I see it, I love it.

I don't think I can pinpoint a favorite thing that I've gotten while thrifting, though. Too many to choose from.

  21. Those are some great finds in my favorite colors!

  22. i love that sewing machine! i should send you a picture of mine, it's a singer from the 60's and has "fashion discs" to do fancy stitches. it was my grandmother's and she gave it to me when i first started sewing. i love using a machine that created my mother's prom dress and baby clothes for me.
    machines with history= amazing!

  23. The best find I have ever made was last summer when I found a woman selling all of this vintage silk and linen, both fabric and emroidered pieces for $2 a bag, I regret not fill more bags of it.

I learned how to sew on a machine like you found, are you using it for projects?

    ReplyDelete
  24. THe design of that machine is so great (and the color). Will you actually use it?

I love pitchers of all varieties - and especially love the blues...

  25. Great treasure finds Maya! The blue sewing machine was meant to be yours! And the possibilities are endless with those darling sewing drawers!

You know me...I'm quite a vintage and thrift-a-holic ;) I think our love for vintage fans is what brought us together in the very beginning too!

    ReplyDelete
  26. congratulations! it's a beauty and it fits you perfectly...ahh the colour...!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, wow, Maya!! I'm feeling a bit jealous right now (sorry about that!) especially about that sewing machine... What a great find! Simply amazing! Congratulations!

  28. I guess I'm in good company when it comes to loving the thrift! Here are a few answers:
I haven't plugged in the machine, yet! I need to clear a space on my cluttered work table! The woman I bought it from wasn't the original owner, but said that it did work and that the lightbulb does, too. I'm trusting her. It looks so well cared for and sturdy. I'm in love with my Pfaff and will continue to use it as my primary sewing machine... but I'm so excited to try this out. It was $35! I don't come home with a haul like this very often... thanks for joining me in the thrill... I love hearing about your finds, too... vicarious shopping for all of us!

  29. Oooh, those blue pitchers are fabbo! I bet you'll love the machine. I have a Singer 201 from the 40s that I use for everything. It's gear driven and sews through the thickest layers. And it was five bucks at a yard sale--which included the original cabinet. Woo hoo!

  30. Hi Maya, Where did you find those treasures? I am defintitely in need of some time at the barn when you hold your next workshop. Hope you are enjoying the stupendous weather! xo katri

  31. Katri-I went to the flea market at the Antique Mall... I'll call you for the next one. Please consider coming to the barn for a workshop... I'll have to start thinking summer dates!

  32. Ahem--call me too! You found such wonderful things. I have been on a mission to purge, not acquire, but your treasures are enough to make me want to get out to the markets again.

  33. Woh wonderful, that must be your best day ever!!! It's great

  34. Fabulous finds indeed. I'm so sad that second hand stores here are practically nonexistant. When I travel back to Canada I limit myself to clothes from the thrift store as there's a weight limit to contend with. Thrifted kids books seem to sneak their way in though. English kids books are terribly expensive here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just this past weekend I got two really nice dining room chairs for $5 a piece I can't wait to recover them in funky fabric! The best scores for me though is always lots of really good kids clothes for insanely cheap prices like a quarter.

  36. I am in love with that sewing machine. I'd have to pick my jaw up off the floor if I found that! My best find? Would probably be my three green Brody chairs or a Le Creuset saucepan... It's so hard to pick from them all! :)

  38. I spent my childhood as the garage-sale wingman to my mom, who mapped out our town with a strategic plan each Saturday morning. And now, I'm a flea market/g.s junkie myself, it can't be helped. I am in LOVE with your scores - that tablecloth is gorgeous.

  39. Amber- sounds like our moms might be friends! We had a strategic Saturday plan, too! she still does!

  40. I can't beleive that sewing machine! It's awesome! I would just buy it to decorate my room!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oooh, that tablecloth! I guess it would look good on a table, but all I can think about is what a wonderful summer skirt it would make--good finds all around!

  42. Those are the colors I love! So happy you made it to the flea market. I'd like to know how you managed to convince your family to go!

  45. At an estate sale I found 18 yards of 10 %wool 90% cashmere blend fabric - $2

I also found a vintage dress that fits me perfectly - $1.

  46. What a great sewing machine! When my fiance and I first moved into our new home we scored a neat enamel top cabinet for $5 at an auction. It was in sad shape and everyone thought we were nuts for hauling it home. After some work it is now a gorgeous vintage island in our kitchen. It was our first thing bought togther and our favorite piece in our home!
